Do you have a go-to recipe in your family? One that you can turn to when you’re in a pinch and you know you always have the ingredients on hand? That’s how this sweet and sour meatballs recipe is for our family!
One of my personal favorite parts of the sweet and sour meatballs recipe is the sauce. The flavor, in my opinion, is the perfect amount of sour and sweet. I love to take bites of the meatballs, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese all mixed in with the sauce!
My husband, however, does not prefer the sauce because he isn’t a big ketchup person. He truly enjoys when I simply leave the sauce off of his meatballs!
To make this recipe, you’ll need to prepare two separate things prior to cooking: the meatballs and the sauce.
To make the meatballs, you’ll need:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs (I use Italian… but any flavor would be fine!)
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk (I use regular milk and it works great!)
- 4 TBSP minced onion (I don’t do this fresh – I use it from a spice jar)
- 1/2 tsp salt
To make the sauce, you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 TBSP white vinegar
I typically serve this with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese… which seems to be my go-to side dishes! Especially with the sweet and sour meatballs recipe and the parmesan oven fried chicken recipe!

Notes
My husband doesn’t prefer the sweet and sour sauce (more for me!). So, I make his meatballs the exact same way but leave the sauce off and he loves it!
