In our home, we have certain responsibilities that each child is expected to do each day. For example, Brooklynn (6 years old) helps set the table, cleans her room, picks up her dirty clothes and puts them into the laundry room, and more. My son, Grayson (5 years old + ASD), cleans up his toys each night before bed, picks up his dirty clothes, and cleans up after himself after meals.
In this season of staying home, I’m looking to add more chores and make them more “set” in our routine. I started researching all of the ways that kids can help out around the house that are age appropriate – I was blown away!
Please keep in mind that daily responsibilities and chores need to be taught. Children do not simply understand how to do these things naturally! Also, give a little grace to the kids as they are learning how to do them.
Each list builds on the last list. Meaning, a 6 year old can certainly still feed the pets if they are the youngest/only child… and a 10 year old can still be responsible for picking up his/her toys!
